Sara, Justin, Chandra, and James sign new deals
Justin Chambers, Chandra Wilson, James Pickens Jr. and Sara Ramirez have signed new two-year deals for Grey's Anatomy, TVGuide.com has learned.

The quartet joins Ellen Pompeo and Patrick Dempsey, who also extended their contracts through Season 12 back in January. ABC has yet to officially pick up Grey's for Season 11, but the announcement is expected soon.

What about Jcap?

She's on a different schedule.

Do you think we'll know about her contract by the end of this season?
runonsunshine24runonsunshine24 on May 2nd, 2014 11:28 pm (UTC)
JCap signed her contract pre-season 6. Since she likely signed a 7 year contract, that contract would already extend until the end of season 12.

Oh I didn't know it. Thanks!!

just wondering why you think she signed a 7 year contract? that seems like a long contract for a show. Is that just the norm for initial contracts?

also if so why is sara contract up now if she signed as regular season 3 wouldn't her contract have been redone end season 9?

and SOO happy sara is back for 2 more years!

She might not have but she's on a different schedule than Ramirez and the others anyway and her contract agreements might well be longer since her original commitment was later in the show's run. She's at least a season ahead in her agreement (if not two), probably on the same renewal schedule as McKidd.

Almost every actor that comes onto a network show signs 7 year contracts. They are the standard contract, whether it's season 1 or 10. The network holds all the cards with a 7 year contract. They can pick up 1 year of it, 5 years, or all 7. Each year is an "opt-in" for the network. The actor is committed as long as the network keeps opting in. The only times you see people sign less than 7 year contracts are when they have significant bargaining power. Like big name stars who the show needs (Ashton Kutcher on 2 1/2 Men) or people who have already been on the show and are re-signing. They can negotiate for a smaller contract in terms of years they are locked in at that price. That's why Dempsey, Pompeo, and Oh were able to strike 2 year deals. Now, two years later, if they are willing to stay they can negotiate again.

Sara, as well as all of the originals signed 7 year contracts. According to their original contracts, Dempsey, Pompeo, & co. would have been up post season 7 and Sara post season 9. However, in season 3 or 4 the show was doing so well that ABC offered to renegotiate all the existing contracts. It's another standard network move when a show takes off. They say, "We're willing to give you bigger paychecks, BUT we want you to commit to another year". So they got pay bumps, a bonus check at the time of signing, and their contracts were extended a year. Therefore, the originals were up after season 8 and Sara after season 10. Remember when Katherine Heigl first got press about saying ABC didn't value her as much as Sandra Oh? That was when they were renegotiating. Heigl leaked stuff, ABC leaked stuff. I think Heigl was the only one who didn't finish renegotiating her contract. They cut talks off and she was happy not committing to another year. She still left even before her original contract was up though.

thank you for explaining all that!! :) If all goes well we can have at least 2 more years of calzona :)

One question... I thought I'd heard from Pompeo that part of the reason people were so upset with her is that she DID take an extension, then turned around and wanted out? There was something along those lines that happened... she was getting movies, she was getting married & having kids, and suddenly decided that she wasn't so interested in being on Grey's anymore. It was that, coupled with her public snubbing of the show re: the Emmys/the writing that has resulted in Shonda Rhimes being completely done with her.

Ya, I wasn't 100% sure what happened with Heigl, I just thought they didn't renegotiate. I just was going off the reports that she had broken off talks. Then in the EW interview with her they said she left her contract 18 months early. They could have resumed talks and renegotiated it without press and the EW article published it without confirmation.

Yay for Sara. Boo the others. lol

Wasn't really worried about Sara or Chandra, a little about Justin but when I learned Jo was being kept I figured he'd be around. The one I was most uncertain about was probably JPJ.

Yay, although Shonda gave away Sara's status when she mentioned the Calzona house sets being expanded. Yay for Justin too.

well ok then, I think we can safely say that season 12 will be the last so we have 2 more years with the named people, (wonder if any of them got a pay hike with Sandra gone?

Alguém sabe dizer se a Jessica já renovou seu contrato também?

love that sara has re signed for 2 more season but dont hit me with a brick when i say this but i think it should bow out after season 12 because for a show to get to 12 seasons is amazing and let it go out with a bang
Taniacycworker on May 3rd, 2014 06:22 am (UTC)
No bricks here. I think I'll be ready after 12, too. I'm a wee bit concerned that I won't get to see Sara or Jessica act again any time soon after Grey's ends, but still. It'll be time by then, I think.

Though a Callie/Arizona spin off where we get to see them be the characters/have the relationship/stories we had hoped to get on The Fosters would be lovely, too. A cross between something like the ThingVerse fanfics and The Fosters, with no risk of men they know as sperm donors because by then they'll be done having biological children.
gpsc21497 on May 3rd, 2014 06:56 am (UTC)
A spin off would be good about callie and arizona but i think it would depend if Sara and Jessica were prepared to continue in a spin off

I agree that the show is starting to feel like the end is naturally coming close. I like the number 12, good number to close out what has been an amazing show.

Not surprised at all that everyone signed on. Why wouldn't they. Steady gig, playing characters in Shondaland. :-)
