Spoilers from TV Guide Mega Buzz about Thursday's episode
Is this Meredith-Cristina fight going to end soon on Grey's Anatomy? — coolteacher31, via Twitter

NATALIE: Nope. In fact, it will spill over into April's wedding now that they (and Arizona) are serving as bridesmaids. "Cristina and Meredith are stuck in a few different rooms throughout the course of the episode because they have to be in the same space," Sarah Drew says, teasing that April will go full Bridezilla because of their bickering. "Obviously, there is so much tension and a lot of it really comes to a head during this episode. You'll see April have a 'Hello, this is my day' moment. 'I fired those people for you three?! This is supposed to be my day!'"

Sounds like the ep will be funny-ish. Wish the Mer/Cristina thing would end already though. Neither of them look very good and I'm over it.

I'm totally over the Christina & Meredith thing. Meredith's still pissed about something Christina said a month ago & now she feels inferior & she's been trying to overcompensate & now they're just fighting about nothing. I don't think it's Christina fighting as much as it is Meredith. But now Christina's getting pissed but I don't think she's actively trying to bicker with Meredith. I think she's more worried about her job.

That's not what it's really about is it? Meredith is seeking her defining who she is as a mother, a doctor, a surgeon and a wife. She's fighting through her own ghosts and working to being "exceptional" as Ellis put it.

Cristina is her person and knows her better than anyone. She knows the struggle and the history. In Meredith's eyes, Cristina isn't being there for her as she works through this new struggle.

Cristina on the other hand is feeling the same. She came back to SGMW a new person, allowing feelings she's suppressed to come to out into the light. Things went to heck in a basket and now she's retreated back into her professional shell. Meredith isn't helping her through it.

Their dynamics have changed. They're growing apart as they each "seem" to be growing in different directions.

Least, that's the story I'm seeing. Could be wrong. Usually am. :)

It all started with Christina kicking Meredith off of the surgery. Then Christina was a little harsh in her words when she explained why. Meredith got her feelings hurt & has since been mad at Christina & has been overcompensating trying to prove she can be a great surgeon & be a mom too. Hence Alex & Stephanie having to override her in her own surgery. Then she went off on Christina about the conduit failing before the surgery & how Christina was a failure. Add in them bickering about the 3D printer & it's a bunch of nonsense going back & forth. Meredith is still upset at what Christina said to her the day of that surgery when Zola fell & hit her head. She hasn't let it go & now there's all this tension & they bicker. It's gone on far too long IMO. They're only growing apart because they're fighting over something dumb. They've always been different when it came to family life. Merdere had Zola & that never created any problems. Now that they had baby Bailey, suddenly everyone thinks they're going in different directions. Christina has to accept Meredith's role as surgeon AND mother. Christina seems to think that you can't be your best if you have things holding you back. It's called delegating.

Except it's not delegating. It's putting your job before your family. It's what doctors do on a regular basis. But Meredith was raised by a woman who never saw her, was a lousy Mom and was never there for her.

Meredith doesn't want to be Ellis. She's trying to find the balance. Now her person, the person she trusted more than anyone has called her out. Has told her you can't be both. She struck hard and fast and Meredith is reeling from the truth of it all.

It has nothing to do with Cristina. It has everything to do with Meredith. Thus the residents making the call, thus the push-back from Alex -- thus it all. Meredith is trying to prove something to herself, find her truth in what it means to be an outstanding surgeon and an outstanding Mom and if she can be both.

Forgive me, but Zola was easy compared to a newborn. Zola was easier and there wasn't a lot of conflict in Mom/kids. Meredith struggled with snacks and remembering things and baby sitters for if Zola was sick and couldn't go to daycare and now that struggle has doubled and she's questioning herself and trying to find a balance.

It is different. Shonda made it crystal clear that this will be Meredith' struggle (at least in the first half and now it sounds like it will carry through the season).

It's not like it was before. It will get more complicated as things with Derek change as well as his career takes on a new direction (Washington/Brain Mapping yada yada).

She's not just mad and holding a grudge at Cristina. She's mad and holding a grudge with Shane and Alex and anyone who either challenges her abilities or decision making skills as a doctor because she's not sure if she can draw the line in the right place regarding family and surgery.

Cristina and Meredith have always had different values in family and lifestyles- but this is the first time it's taken a hard right after Cristina has gone further back into her shell.

It actually started earlier than the actual "fight". Raindrops spatter here and there since Zola. It's just now built into a storm.

It is changing dynamics for both of them and it will get worse not better. They have different priorities and vantage points. Ones that weren't present months or years ago.

Betting Cristina will change her tune about Callie now as well. Not because of the kids but because of the "botched" surgery if her reaction to the civil suit was any indication.

They're drawing a hard line with Cristina - and it will probably get heightened as the season progresses until she cracks. I expect that not to happen until episode 20 or so....

We all know Meredith doesn't want to be like Ellis. That's the thing; she's NOTHING like her mother. She's not turning into her mother. My whole point of this, was that it stemmed from Christina's words the day she kicked her off the surgery. She felt inferior after that & felt she needed to prove something since. She doesn't have this fight with Christina, then she doesn't have these problems with everyone else. These problems stemmed from how Christina made her feel that day & she hasn't gotten over it yet, hence the actual ongoing fighting between them. Alex even told her that she needed to fix the problem with Christina. Notice how Meredith is still good with Alex & even Stephanie? The only reason she has a problem with Shane is because she went off on Christina a few weeks ago about how she was failing & went in a mini rant to make Christina feel how Christina made her feel until Shane stepped in. So now Shane sees her as a bitch & wants nothing to do with her.

And when I mention Zola, I'm speaking in reference to how Christina feels about Meredith as a surgeon & how capable she was/is. Christina never acted as if Zola set back Meredith's career, but as soon as she has another baby, Christina all but implies that Meredith can't be a great surgeon & still be a good mom. That's why I mentioned delagating. I think her & Derek have gotten into a good schedule. She's doing her things & Derek took a step back from the OR to work on his research so Meredith can do her things & so the kids aren't in daycare 24/7. Christina seems to think if you have kids, you can't possibly be as good as prepared as her when it comes to the job. Which is simply not true, because a great surgeon is a great surgeon. They just have different dreams now & that's fine. But Meredith's problems right now ARE stemmed from what Christina said to her.

So we can agree to disagree on this one.
theresaw1934theresaw1934 on December 12th, 2013 12:36 am (UTC)
Absolutely - agree to disagree. :)

For the record, not disputing your recant of events - just saying I feel there's more to it in that I'm reading the emotions and reasons behind the interactions differently. That's what we're here for right? Expressing ideas, opinions, learning, seeing different perspectives. It's all good.

100% agreed the spiral intensified with Cristina's remark. Meredith is and has been questioning herself and having Cristina call her out makes it 10 times worse.

Plus, I think they're both feeling the difference in their relationship and dynamic. They have to as they truly are moving in new directions as it should be.

Putting the oar back in the water, I strongly feel there will be another thing to deal with on the mother vs. doctor front from Derek who faces a tough call. He has something great coming up professionally. Can he truly stay in the back or will he step up front and what does that do to Meredith's internal mechanisms.

Wondering if they'd ever go the nanny route.

Anyway, thanks for the exchange and sharing your thoughts!

It's really disheartening that Sandra Oh's/Cristina Yang's last season is being spent fighting with her person and doing random things like hooking up with freaking Shane. The character deserves more than that, and I have high hopes for great things to come for her in the back half of the season, because this is no way to send off such an important character to the show.

BABY.withoutyoursmil on December 11th, 2013 04:34 am (UTC)
Seriously. She deserves so much more than this. Her entire story this season has been completely pointless and I really could not care less about her hookups with her intern or her petty bickering with Meredith. Sigh.

Props to the show for making me not sad at all that Cristina is leaving.

Right? I mean it is so exhausting watching them. But I would have Meredith leave & take Derek with her. Let Cristina be dammit! *Denial*

I think they'll pull Cristina's storyline out of the weeds and she'll get a good send off...think I read that she (SO) had said she'd come back for the series finale whenever the hell that is....honestly it seems that if you ask to be let off this show or you don't renew your contract, Shonda has you eaten by woodland creatures or hit by buses...she is not a woman to be crossed....

Do we know what will be going on with Arizona in this episode? I am a little wary and have lost a little faith in the writing this season. Can anyone blame me? Thanks and apologies if this has been answered elsewhere. (Currently on a business trip and feeling out of it!)

based on the sides. it seems Arizona, Callie and Alex are working together on a kid who needs a arm amputation.
wild_fableswild_fables on December 11th, 2013 04:12 pm (UTC)
Excellent - thank you for the insight. I'm excited to see Arizona actually working on an actual pediatric case. Thanks again!
