Tara aka Naomi - Sam and Dr. Hall walk towards the elevators. As they arrive the doors open and out steps a woman, Tara (48), Dr. Hall’s patient and Craig’s estranged wife. She’s tough, she’s had a lot of bad luck but came through stronger. She’s stops dead in her tracks when she sees Sam, Craig’s son. Tara tells Sam he looks just like his father, Sam, extends his hand and introduces himself, Tara says it was like seeing a ghost for a second there. He points Tara down the hall. Tara asks if he suffered at the end. Sam says no, that he was pretty much out of it. They share a common hatred of Craig. ICU Corridor - Sam and Tara walk and talk. He asks about her not bringing Adam, she says 2 plane tickets are expensive and just weren’t in the cards. She’s only there for the watch. He can do whatever he wants with the rest of the stuff - dealer’s choice. Tara looks around. Something feels wrong. Sam leads her into a room and she sees Craig in bed, very much alive but asleep and plugged into machines. Tara asks what the hell, he’s not dead? Tells Sam he lied to her, he says yes, Tara’s shock turns to anger.
ICU Corridor - Sam and Tara are outside fighting. Dr. Hall watches from a distance. Tara says it can’t be legal to call someone and say “he’s dead” if its untrue. Sam says he IS dying. He’s in sepsis and his organs are failing. He has days at the most. And, he knows that she’s coming. Tara says so what? Asks if she is supposed to sit there and kiss away his tears. He was a total bastard. The watch belonged to her father. He pawned the other two then took her father’s watch and left. Sam tells her Craig is sick and its been hell. He thinks Tara is the only reason he’s hanging on and tells her not to bail on him now. Tara takes it in and goes into the room. Sam stays outside, thankful that it work. Tara comes back out with the watch. She shakes her head at Sam and tells him that she was with Craig for 5 years and she knows what it sounds like when he’s full of crap. Says that Sam is 100% his son then walks away.
Scrub Nurse - Night, scrub room. A scrub nurse enters the room and tells Dr. Hall that the chief is looking for him/her. Dr. Hall says “I’ll be right there”, the nurse nods and leaves.
Paramedic - Dr. Hall runs in with a paramedic from the breezeway with a bloody patient on a gurney. Paramedic says there was a MVC pileup down by the waterfront. Pedestrian hit by a car, looks like multiple fractures.
Penny - ER day. The ER is busy after a car accident. Dr. Clark is working on a girl, Penny, while conferring with a paramedic. Dr. Clark asks if they know what caused the accident. Penny says it was a huge lizard on the sidewalk, right by her car. She then goes unconscious.
Trauma room - Dr. Hall is examining Robert, Lizard Man, doing a penlight neuro exam while stealing glances at his face. Robert says let me guess, you’re going to call a vet. Dr. Hall apologizes saying he’s the actual Lizard Man. She thought it was an internet hoax. Robert says no - a living legend. He was walking down the street when a woman causes and accident and a car comes up on the sidewalk and hits him. Dr. Hall says the woman said she was distracted by him. Robert says everyone stares. The see their own inability to become who they dreamed of being. Dr. Hall asks if he has contacts because the pupils aren’t responding. He removes them, the teeth are permanent veneers. Dr. Halls stares, fascinated and unsettled. Robert asks if she’s going to doctor him up, she snaps out of it and starts busying herself. Robert asks about a kid he saw that cracked her head open. Dr. Hall says she can find out but let’s worry about getting him out of there so he can sunbathe some more. She thinks its hilarious, Robert not so much.
Trauma room, day - Dr. Hall is taking xrays of Robert’s x-fix. Security is outside. Dr. Hall says its holding. Robert tells her to tell the little girl he is sorry, Dr. Hall says they just might tell her he was a bad dream. Robert says he never should have done it, never should have left the house. The whole accident and all these people are hurt because of him, because of the stupid thing he did to himself. When he started this everybody said you really think you’ll like this in 20 years? He thought he would, he thought he knew who he was, he was 19. Now he works from home in the same data entry job for 16 years. He can’t date, the kind of women that find him attractive scare him. He has no friends. People stare and laugh. He didn’t leave his house for a year and a half. Finally he said to himself he has to do something to live again. Just go out, go or a walk. That was today. He is devastated. Dr. Hall says she is going to redress it and make sure it is stable. Robert asks if it can be done quickly. He just wants to go home.
Little Girl - Peds room. A little girl from the ER sleeps with her head bandaged. A shadow moves across her face. A man with tattoos all over his face leans over, remorseful. The little girl screams her lungs out. A nurse comes running in, the girl is terrified.
Rita/Miles - Upscale restaurant day. Annie is late and very nervous as she approaches a table. A man and a woman stand to greet her. NIH staffers. Serious people in serious suits. Miles introduces himself, Miles Voight, then Rita, Rita Belmont. They shake hands, Annie apologizes for being late. Miles says they knew she would be late. They have been tracking her phone since they spoke. Annie is stunned. Miles then busts out laughing saying he’s messing with her. They don’t track phones. Tells Annie to have a seat. Miles is fun and fast. Miles continues (serious) saying don’t kid yourself. They know a lot about her. Those associated with NIH programs require deeper background checks. It can be very personal and uncomfortable at times. Annie says she understands. Miles says great, let’s eat lunch, ask a few questions and go home happy. Miles wants to start with her ex-husband, saying when they met she was a student of his, were you not? Annie says she supposes she was, is that bad? Miles laughs and says well, he made an honest woman of you.
Interior of a restaurant, day. Annie sits with Rita and Miles, NIH staffers. Miles talks fast, Rita takes notes. Annie isn’t on firm footing, they know so much. Miles says her mom seems to be doing well, she’s not a concern. Its hiring undocumented workers that will get you the boot. And outstanding debts but says Annie is good there, not even student loans. Asks if she was on the crew team at Harvard. Annie says no but suddenly is weirdly unsure, asks if someone said she was. Miles tells her to relax, he rowed for Stanford and thought maybe they’d been at a match together. Annie laughs nervously, relieved. Until “Dr. Martin, what can you tell us about Sarah Boetcher?” Annie looks as though she’s been slapped in the face, says this is why you are here, is this relevant? Rita says start with why you have been sending $3500 every month. Miles means serious business.
Next scene - Annie is finishing a difficult story, saying she started sending money. It was the least she could do. Rita asks ‘since you were 16?’. Annie says it wasn’t much then, as she made more she sent more. Rita asks besides the checks has she had any contact with Sarah at any time, gone to see her? Annie says never, Rita writes notes. Rita says if they move forward they will need complete transparency. Be prepared to tell the story again. That’s only IF they move forward.
Renee - James walks through a gorgeous apartment with a realtor, Renee (50s). Renee says they will fix the gutters and water damage in the bedroom. She says she rarely sees a move go through this fast, that he must have been really ready to move. James says sometimes you just need a fresh start. Renee says she hears him, that sometimes it just clicks and its time to move on. James asks about the carpet, Renee says they should be coming to replace it today and that she’ll call. She dials and heads into another room.
Mario - Conference room, day. Barbara, a patient, and Tim sit across from Mario the Notary (60s). Mario says every where there is a red tag they need to sigh. Tim says he smiles when he thinks about doing this. Thinks of their future. Kids, tire swings, Christmases and graduations. Just thinking of a life with her makes him smile so much his face hurts. Mario has been sitting there trying not to intrude and asks if they are going to go for it. Barbara looks terrified but she is resolute, she wants this too. Tim kisses her, Mario tells them kissing the bride isn’t enough, they need to sign. Barbara grabs a pen and begins signing the mountain of papers. Mario is taken by these two.
